Sarah Palin Hits Daily Double: Obama Okays New Alaskan Oil Drilling & Huckabee Says He Won’t Run

The president’s announcement, which included plans for expanded drilling in Alaska demonstrate[s] his commitment to reducing oil imports by increasing domestic production…Mr. Obama said the administration would begin to hold annual auctions for oil and gas leases in the Alaska National Petroleum Reserve, a 23-million-acre tract on the North Slope of Alaska. The move comes after years of demands for the auctions by industry executives and Alaska’s two senators, Lisa Murkowski, a Republican, and Mark Begich, a Democrat.

In crediting Murkowski and Begich for the policy change, The New York Times omitted the name of Sarah Palin, who’s been screaming about this for at least as long and even more loudly than have Alaska’s two U.S. senators.

Hours later, Mike Huckabee, who won the 2008 Iowa Caucus, announced he would not be a candidate next year.

Today’s news makes it clearer than ever that Sarah will have a second chance–and her last chance–at the brass ring of national political power.

And don’cha think she’s gonna take it?

Because Sarah is not an elected official, but only a celebrity screecher from the sidelines, she can’t claim credit (except on her Twitter and Facebook pages and on Fox News) for having persuaded President Obama to change his mind about the vital economic and environmental issues posed by the prospect of reopening Alaska’s North Slope to further exploration (some would say “exploitation”) by Big Oil.

And won’t it gall her to see Sen. Lisa Murkowski, in particular, cited as one who made “demands” to which President Obama eventually caved?

Especially with Huckabee handing her, gift wrapped, the USA’s evangelical base, it seems obvious that Sarah will announce her candidacy for president later this year:  if she doesn’t, a year from now people won’t even remember how she spells her name. (Is it p-a-l-i-n, or p-a-l-l-i-n, as in “pallin’ around with terrorists”?)

Even if, as many argue, the personal bottom line of   http:www.Palingrifters.com is what Sarah cares about most (or only), she must recognize that as soon as she definitively takes herself out of the GOP 2012 candidate pool (aka “The Sargasso Sea”), nobody will care any more about what she says, what she wears, how she looks, Track’s latest brush with the law, Bristol’s latest plastic surgery, Willow’s latest brush with the law, or even whether she really gave birth to Trig.

Sarah’s greatest fear is irrelevance. What if she fell in a forest and nobody heard?

Bruce Springsteen might as well have been writing Fade Away for Sarah in 1980, when she was a sophomore at Wasilla High:

(Disc 2) 04 – Fade Away

I don’t wanna fade away
Oh I don’t wanna fade away
Tell me what can I do what can I say
Cause darlin’ I don’t wanna fade away

Do you really think she’ll just fade away now?

Having come out of nowhere to get this far,  will she go gently into that good night without even a last hurrah?

Especially after Huckabee’s Saturday night announcement that he won’t run,

His decision to forgo a run presumably leaves that space wide open for Ms. Palin, a self described “Bible-believing Christian”

Doesn’t it seem that God is working overtime this weekend to open doors for her so she can plow through?

Hope he gets at least time-and-a-half.

  • Pam:

How is she going to bash the press on this one?

  • The big problem with Obama’s decision to push forward on opening the National Petroleum Reserve in Alaska is that it comes a week or so after government estimators decided that there is almost no oil there. Quite a bit of gas, but almost no oil. It is a shame that Huckabee got out since the entire Republican roster of candidates is about as exciting as Al Gore before he decided that the world was about to end. Sarah Palin would add sex appeal but so would Charlie Sheen.

  • BfromC:

I think Sarah will play this out as long as she can. Hopefully until your book comes out, Joe. But I seriously doubt she will make a genuine run for it, in the end. She and the Huckster like being celebrities, without the added responsibility.

  • truthrocks:

The C4Pers are SO excited! They want her to announce her candidacy NOW! Right now! It’s such an intense cognitive dissonance experience everytime I read their comments about how perfect she is for the presidency and how much they respect and adore her. Just shakin’ my head.

  • Beth deris:

There’s one thing for sure, Fox will keep her for her snake tongue against Pres. Obama in the 2012 campaign.
After the election she finished but I hate to see the violence she creates till then. I just don’t want to see her fade into the wood work and get away with all she’s done thumbing her nose at us. This woman does need to be brought down. Vicious and evil is to delicate to describe her. By the way who has the teflon coating on her.

  • lilybart:

If the rumors of an actual Babygate book are true, I can’t see how she survives that and the emails and all the books and she has to off Michele Bachmann, who I hear has an operation in Iowa.

But she must run, her mental illness demands it.

  • B:

If she keeps herself in the news, your book should sell even better, Joe. Can Palin wait till Nov. to announce, to let all the books and emails and revelations and reality shows play out while she lies low?

  • carollt:

Having just finished Geoffrey Dunn’s excellent book, I am also convinced that Mrs. Palin will run for the Republican nomination. It seems very doubtful that Mrs. Palin could be elected dog catcher anywhere in Alaska, so running for President is her only option. And Joe you are absolutely correct in your assessment of her popularity; if she does not run, people will quickly forget about Sarah and then her gravy train will come to an abrupt halt.

She has to run, no doubt about it. When she announces, there is no doubt she will speak the code and mention her servant’s heart. I believe she has a serpent’s heart; one of the greatest Charlatans of our time.

It will be interesting to see how Mrs. Palin ducks out of the debates and the Sunday news shows. I imagine Mrs. Palin will try mightily, but how does she duck Meet the Press? Does one of her minions watch David Gregory’s every word seeking to find an excuse not to appear on the program – making Mrs. Palin the victim yet again? I miss Tim Russert, but I digress.

Thank you Joe, for having the “cajones” to move in next door to the Queen. I look forward to some great reporting.

  • icvillages:

Servant’s heart. That always got me. Shamed into action (as long as it wasn’t under the guise as Chief Executive over her cold and hungry constituents, cause you know, so much is NOT a government responsibility) she got her first taste of learjet travel with Franklin Graham’s Samaritan’s Purse traveling out to her affected villages of Marshall and Russian Mission on the Lower Yukon suffering from a fuel crisis.

She made an obscure Biblical connection of her inaction as Governor to that of her private charitable efforts, then went on to say in so many words that the Eskimo are lazy, don’t work, need new leadership and be just like her. This woman who broadcasts every ‘achievement’ real or perceived, chooses to keep her charitable activities to herself? She is confounding, simply UNBELIVEABLE.

  • hockeynana:

I am so glad that you are blogging now, Joe. Your insight into people with deep mental problems is a real asset in dealing with the Palin clan.

Just curious…I have not heard that Track has again shown his true character and has had a brush with the law. Can you tell us more about that? None of the Palin children seem to have fallen far from the tree! I remember the videos of Todd assaulting that former teacher in Homer and trespassing on her property and tearing down her sign (all chargeable offenses) and also when he made such an ass of himself when that man was taping them in an airport. They are a family with very serious problems.

How anyone can think that they would in any way be an asset to our country is beyond me!!

  • ManxMamma:

I, too, miss Tim Russert immensley.

  • KatieAnnieOakley:

You know those old teflon pans, the ones everyone has had? You buy a new one and it’s shiny & new, makes great meals, you turn to it often… until the teflon begins to flake-off. Then you find that you’re using that pan less and less BECAUSE the food is sticking to it. You start to wonder: is that teflon going INTO ME via my food?

So you throw out that pan… and get another one. They’re so cheap, anyway. Out with the old, in with the new.

Same with $arah. Her teflon is flaking; the personal & political filth is starting to stick to her; people are turning away from her more & more. And they’re realizing: she really, really HAS contributed to the breakdown of political discourse in this country. And what she has to say really, really is poppycock.

Eventually, when she becomes more of a bother to report on vs being the moneymaking producer that she was, the media will report on her less and less. They’ve already stopped reporting each & every tweet and Facebook rant. Her approval ratings are in the basement…

Out with the old. In with the new.

  • mitch:

Fade away? How about spontainious human combustion. And thanks for the shout-out on one of the “gates” blogs Katie AnnieOakley. I guess I have a girl friend!

  • juicyfruityy:

I thought it was, ANWR, that the Queen was promoting. She had already had her gas and oil people in place. Our President is going with a different area. These areas will come with a new auction for lease. He is not allowing her to control the area with those that she may already have in place. This is not a win for her. This will create jobs and the Queen seems to like her people to be dumb and poor.

  • Susan:

I, too, don’t think Palin will run. Apart from anything else, I don’t see her willing to debate any of the other Republican candidates, who at least can utter coherent sentences.

I also agree that she’ll delay announcing as long as possible in order to maintain her marketability.

  • Please, I can’t imagine any guy under 70 who thinks Granny Paylin is “sexy”
Too much makeup, plastic surgery, lip gloss, raccoon eye shadow.

And imho, the sexiest connection you can have with a woman is based on
intellect, spirit, and joie de vivre.

Paylin is fanatic religious nutcase with a narcissistic
streak a mile wide and a vicious backbite.

I’d sooner “pal around” with a scorpion in my bed.

  • lilly lily:

Whatever will get her more $$$$$. She has high ends tastes in luxury private jet or 1st class travel, 5 star accomadations, and a full money inflow without having to put out a dime of her own.

That sounds like a very probable presidential run to me. And every few years she will run as long as the money flow doesn’t dry up.

Her easy (all the same with a little new thrown in) chit chats at 100,000 each plus all expenses, could be drying up. She is a very tedious and even boring speaker from the little I heard from the televised Pennsy Lahashka school gig. And isn’t the paying audience vanishing?. Smaller pickings?

Do you think some people have begun to realize how ignorant and stupid she actually is?

Plus she is bashing Levi now as an absentee dad, when that was what she and Bristol wanted all along.

  • EatMoreFish:

All — Make sure you check out today’s Politicalgates! It contains an amazing Twitter confrontation with the Anchorage Daily News’ Julia O’Malley over her recent article about Pay-lin’s ‘pregnancy.’

O’Malley immediately deleted all of her snarky, immature messages – in which she contradicts herself and admits several untruths – but Politicalgates was able to save them all!!

It is all deliciously devastating for O’Malley, who comes off as a 12 year old $arah shill.

  • Joe,

please take a look at my twitter conversation with ADN-journalist Julia O’Malley about “babygate” – which she then deleted afterwards:

    http://politicalgates.blogspot.com/2011/05/anchorage-daily-news-journalist-julia.html

  • OysterTeaser:

I got soundly beaten by her base (on a Fox comment section) when I dared ask how much charity work has $arah Palin done since the VP nomination?

After three hours they came up with exactly two actual charity promotions, one in 2008 and one in 2009 and oh, one to be in May 2010 – that actually cost the charity money.

  • Sarah HalfTime:

What is Screech gonna screech about now?

And that whole “drill, baby drill” that was chanted when she took the stage and started her speech…. totally planned out and probably set up without notice to the McCain campaign wonks.
Basically, it wasn’t even Alaska’s Shames mantra. The Quitter shoplifts ya know. And if she ain’t shoplifting, she Anita tellin the truth. That’s about it, ain’t not much more in her brain.

  • Tservo:

    Right.
An added plus: you are now an official enemy of the C4P!
Welcome to the club. I too, dared to debate a Palin ‘bot recently, and was informed, over and over, because someone said vile things about Palin- Letterman, say- and I don’t support Palin, I am therefore a violent hater by proxy, who endorses Palin’s death and rape of her children.
    Then it got creepy.
They repeat themselves over and over, and they don’t back down- they are very much like a cult.

  • KatieAnnieOakley:

She’ll still bitch about something. She’s still $arah Palin, after all…

  • CorningNY:

    Great analogy. Very apt.

  • Jill:

When Palin quit the governorship, she made it clear (to me, anyway) that she was no longer a politician.

Instead, she is a highly paid entertainer. She appears on Fox TV as a commentator, wrote 2 books, gives paid speeches, and had her own reality show. She is like Rush Limbaugh now: a political entertainer, not a politician. The job is easier and the pay is MUCH higher.

I’ve believed this steadfastly since she quit. She is just not a serious politician any more. There is no way that she can overcome the hurdle of quitting in the middle of her first term as governor and become a credible candidate for president. How could she possibly convince a majority of voters that she would stick to the tough job of president for 4 full years?

In the debates and on the campaign trail, she has to know that her opponents will bring up her quitting in the middle of her first term as governor, relentlessly. She’ll have a prepared answer, and she’ll have to toss out variations of it over and over again. Does she really want to vigorously defend herself as a quitter?

So, I have been certain that she will not run. But, there is one caveat: I think she will do whatever she believes will keep her market value high.

Would it be more lucrative to run and lose (I don’t think she could win the Republican nomination) or not run at all? That is the question.

Gryphen has posted a plausible scenario of Palin running for a short while then pulling out due to ‘family issues’, as a way of maintaining hope (also known as $ in her pockets) among her supporters for a 2016 run. If she runs and flops miserably, for all to see, it might dampen her earning potential. If she doesn’t toss her hat into the ring, her supporters will be profoundly disappointed and it might dampen her earning potential. This is what she is analyzing to make her decision, imho.

  • vl:

Am all ready to watch “Alaska Ding-Bat” debate 🙂

  • lilybart:

She has SO MANY skeletons in the closet, yet it is the QUITTING that will sink her. Americans don’t like quitters.

  • lilybart:

The President has just shut down the drillers with this announcement and it is NOT ANWR and as we have seen, these companies own leases but they don’t develop the area and he can repeal all the tax breaks the oil companies get in exchange for this minor give.

  • SusanC:

But she won’t debate. She’d get her clock cleaned.

  • themom:

Recently, on the Bill Press radio show, reports of the Bush machine have been in gear and the whisper campaign now has begau to put Jeb in as the 2012 GOP POTUS candidate. Now, with the Huckster not going for it, all those P-bots may be celebrating too soon. If they think that his departure created a shoo-in for their girl.

It also may explain MH’s decision…shades of Elizabeth Dole I am guessing.
