Sarah’s Dilemma: Stuck between Rock & Hard Place

Sarah has palinated herself into a very sticky corner. After her egotistical, ignominious, insensitive response to the attempted assassination of Rep. Gabrielle Giffords in Tuscon forced her into a phase of unaccustomed silence, she watched helplessly as first Michelle Bachmann and then the even bigger blowhard Donald Trump scooped up the Republican detritus that had comprised her base.

Even Conservatives4Palin had to admit today that “Trump Appears to Have Taken Over 50% of Governor Palin’s Support.”

As she jabbers away to Scientologist Greta Van Susteren and picks up the easy money on the junior college lecture circuit, Sarah has to sense that the freefall of her star is gaining velocity.

One can imagine a sense of panic overtaking her.

The only way she can turn things around is by declaring her candidacy for the Republican nomination for president.

But as soon as she does, the free pass she’s been getting on so many issues–including, but not only the circumstances surrounding the birth of Trig–will be revoked.

On the other hand, every day that passes sees her taken less seriously by the serious.

And if she doesn’t run, she will fade into total irrelevance as soon as the 2012 primaries begin.

I believe she’s going to run, but will try to hold off until fall before making an announcement (that is, if Roger Ailes lets her keep her Fox gig that long.) I don’t think her egomania, aka her “competitive instinct,” will allow her to simply continue her slide toward oblivion as Trump, Huckabee and Bachmann pick up her marbles and start to play.

Of course, it doesn’t matter what I think. If God opens the door, she’ll plow through it.

Something I never understood: if the door has already been opened, why does she have to “plow through it?”

Joe, I’d wager that $arah will NOT run for president, simply because she lacks the courage – and as you point out, she would lose her free pass by the media. Also too: she would be reguired to actually speak to others besides Fox and (gasp!) hold discourse with other candidates. No…. she will use the old ‘spend more time with family’ excuse.

Meanwhile, Ms “Alaskan Heart” never comes out of hiding to show her face anywhere in Alaska, nor does she speak with anyone. Must be gettin’ pretty lonely, eh Quitter?

  • kate:

    Brilliant.

  • lilly lily:

It is Her toe suckers (sounds better than calling them panty sniffers) who are keeping the Trig controversy alive in the press. The more they recall, the flimsier the investigation, the fishier it is. Because, lets face it currently most people don’t give a hoot about Trig and where he came from or his father or mother or date of birth. They are more worried about gas prices and jobs and the crazy weather.

They will once she announces that she will run. It is all going to come back to haunt her. The books, the HBO Game Change, Katie Curic and her fiendishly difficult question. “What do you read.” Diabolical.

The charade continues, and God doesn’t give a hoot any more than the majority of the American public. After all some of them are going to wake up before dawn to watch something infinatly more interesting to them. A royal fairy tale wedding with uniforms, and horses and carriages and all that jazz.

  • Sadie:

    Joe,
I am liking you more and more.

  • SherrieGG:

Her daughter doesn’t want her coming to her home in Arizona, her popularity is sinking like a stone…It’s really, really hard being SnowSnooki Palin.

  • zenna:

Well, if anything, it’s time for Palin to ‘milk it’ for all it’s worth and string along her simple-minded followers so they open up their wallets and purses.

I kind of doubt that she’ll run – or if she does she will bail fairly early. She may do it purely to raise money for her PAC. As you say, she will really have to open up this time and that means real answers will be needed about Trig’s birth, her finances, income, tax records, AIP, and all the other ‘Gates that can fill a book. Hey, there’s an idea!

Palin really can’t handle that anymore because it’s just too much work for her. Also, her team is very weak and just can’t handle any kind of real pressure. Plus, no one with any real talent wants to work with Psycho Sarah anymore.

Anyway, her star really is fading fast and her Negative ratings are still very high. But she is still one of the best sources of campaign donations – for Democrats.

  • lynn:

I’m stunned you think she will run. We all seem to agree Palin wants to keep her closet locked. She knows people will be picking at the lock if she runs. Besides, she doesn’t seem to be committed to studying. Not to mention, how will she hide the family dysfunction in D.C? Todd and his hookers, her kids drinking, drugs and sex? I believe she fired the cook in the governor’s mansion because she didn’t want to expose the family’s disarray. How could she deal with the White House?! Finally, the money’s better doing what she does a few times a year.

  • Juan Day:

Sarah Palin is the most hated and ignorant woman on the planet right now, she is not running for president. Also, by not declaring that she is running for president she can hide behind facebook and twitter and have her ghostwriters speak for her. Once she declares she is running, she has to sit at the table with the big boys and Sarah is too illiterate for that. If her family thinks she is an embarrassment now, just wait and see what’s in store for her if she sticks her toes in the water. The other thing is if she announces and gets kicked out of the pool before the party starts she’ll looses the ability to attract opportunities to speak for money and that is what matters to her. Sarah has to get hers now before it is too late.

  • Kilob:

    Mr. McGinniss
Some argue that Sarah Palin is a private citizen now and is under no obligation to answer the Trig birth questioning by releasing his official birth certificate. The fact of the matter is Sarah Palin is not a private citizen while she earns a paycheck from Fox for her narrow minded one sided political expertise, and runs the speech circuit. One should have to right to question the honesty of a political celebrity on any subject regardless if they hold an office or not.

  • zenna:

    One more thing.

She may not have a chance as a presidential candidate but there still is a chance she’ll be selected as VP again. That’s not good.

That’s why we must remain vigilant and never let Palin off the hook. It’s important that all her lies and fraud are exposed.

We’ve been doing pretty well so far and we need to keep going.

  • Nefer:

“Something I never understood: if the door has already been opened, why does she have to “plow through it?””

    She doesn’t understand doorknobs?

Sorry if this is mean-spirited’ but the firestorm of internet-wide stupidity in the last couple days has been, um, difficult.

  • m106:

That’s something I think a lot about actually- the lonliness that must envelop her entire being. I honestly could not live my life like that without losing it, mentally and emotionally. She must be perpetually on the brink of a breakdodwn. Does she EVER experience calm, contentedness, peace? Everything is always afrenzy with her- manic, divisive, hateful, and the lies. The lies alone must devour her innards.

If I didn’t despise her so much, I’d pity her. But, she has reaped what she has sown.

  • Freesia:

Sarah may or may not run. She’s got a 3 pronged problem coming in May: Dunn, Bailey, and the FOIA email dump on the 31st. She will likely be a basket case by the end of the month and in a complete rage.

However with Palin, who confuses smearing the character of others with a sign of character in herself, one thing that may happen (especially if May rattles her as badly as it threatens to) one possible scenario is that she will go on attack against the very people who stole her thunder. It wouldn’t be hard to do, as none of them are worth much more than she is. And the fact of the matter is, in spite of actually having run as a Republican VP, she is not a Republican. She’s a Sarahcan. And if she thought by smearing and snarking at them she could, if nothing else prolong her own time on the stage, she’d do it.

There’s always been talk of a Republican civil war. And nobody loves dividing and trying to conquer more than our Sarah. It’s pretty much her only interest in life other than looking at herself in mirrors. So I wouldn’t be surprised if she just decides that God wants her to go through a door only to tear up the GOP. She already resents them, she has no loyalty to them, and she might decide to destroy them so she can go for the spoils.

Just an idea. It would be classic Sarah. Does she ever leave a situation without having left as much of a mess as possible?

  • m106:

Exactly- who would she get to run as her VP? I can’t see anyone of substance agreeing to it that would give them remotely a chance at an election. Her declaration of a run would be a transparent joke and blatant attempt to fill her coffers.

  • m106:

The only reason she was able to “hide” in ’08 is because she wasn’t at the top of the ticket. If they got too personal, she could say, hey, I”m only the VP nom. But if she IS at the top of the ticket? Even she has to know she’d have people to answer to, media she’d be forced to talk to.

For those who mentioned that maybe she’d attempt VP again? Never. She’s already done that and lost-she won’t do that again. And who in their right mind would pick her again?

  • Mem:

I agree with Joe that she will run. BECAUSE her ego will not allow her NOT to run. She will treat the media as she always has. She will refuse to talk to them as a candidate and will blame that reasoning on the media as she always has. If she does talk to the media it will be on her terms as it has been for a long time. She will talk word salad as she always has and during debates she will just simply say…”May I call you Joe”. She will deny everything said about her and her family as she always has and as always she will get a free pass from the media….Why shouldn’t she run? Nothing will change for her accept the possibility of her ultimate dream…to rule the Country!

  • VERY SORRY TO SAY that the Guardian has pulled the article by Kathleen AGAIN, now for the second time – even the reworded version. We will see what happens next…keep the fingers crossed that everything will turn out to be fine. The communication with the Guardian is very friendly and open. They will consult with their lawyers and will get back to us tomorrow.

  • themom:

I pre-ordered my book and am looking forward to its arrival (can’t be too soon) Often I have wondered about all the civil service positions held by SP and what, if any, are the pensions adding up to each year.

  • Ivyfree:

I’m betting she’ll run, but she’ll claim that since she’s such an outsider she’s going to do it differently: Twitter, Facebook, and a few carefully selected and screened public appearances. No press conferences, and very few interviews, and those only with people she can trust to throw her softball questions like “how bad a president is Obama?” and “when did you realize that Motherhood was your Call from God?” And she’ll drop out towards the end, but she’ll make a production out of revealing whom she will endorse at that point- just to milk it for as much drama as possible.

Then she’ll release a book about God and her presidential campaign.

  • carollt:

It is almost certain that some Republicans who aspire to the nomination have quietly sent staff to Alaska to dig up dirt. No doubt they are holding their powder until after Mrs. Palin announces her intention to run.

I do agree with you Joe in that Mrs. Palin feels panic. But I think she may be feeling some panic because the chickens are coming home to roost, if you will, and Mrs. Palin knows better than anyone what that means. The dirt diggers may have hit gold and Mrs. Palin may have knowledge of that. Not to mention the excellent books that are coming out by persons such as yourself who have taken the time to do some real reporting.

All the dirt coming out has to be weighing very heavily on Mrs. Palin’s mind. How can she turn this around so it is she who is the victim. Perhaps historians can correct me, but I do not remember one time when the American People elected a victim as their President (though some VPs may have played that part).

  • BlueberryT:

I think she will run, too, because I believe that she is a sociopath-narcissist, which makes her incapable of viewing herself realistically. She thinks she is the chosen one and, heck, the door doesn’t have to be open — she’s going through, come hell or high water.

I’ve always felt that it was a bit of a shame that the title “The Sociopath Next Door” had already been taken when you were writing your book, Joe. It would have been so perfect… 😉

  • Sharon_too_also:

She is so small minded, I have no doubt that she would run out of pure spite. I really think the only thing that will cause her to pause is babygate.

  • Jame Doe Seeker:

“How could she deal with the White House”? Meaning, its household staff of hundreds, none of whom would be hired by her? THAT reality may not have yet registered or ‘caught up’ with her. One does not live alone, or in privacy, in the White House. Then, too, there’s the other aspect of “dealing with the White House”: living and working by day, as President, with a professional staff of thousands, most of whom would not be hired by her. The day-time professional staff, the night-time/living quarters staff: there’s no escape to privacy for any president (or their family). That could totally wreck a person with a false persona.

  • kate:

She will run. The dilemma is when will she announce. Not May-June even July…too much coming out. I suspect it will be right before Joe’s book comes out – a pre-counter attack of sorts. Joe’s publish date (September) is out there. Palin will attempt to consume the media with her announcement in hopes of silencing “The Rogue”. Game On! This could be a sequel in the making.

  • Pat Padrnos:

I wonder, though, with the various books coming out this year and all they may reveal – do you think she can handle the dust up from that and run a campaign? She is going to have a lot of negative coming her way soon.
Always enjoy your articles and I check in with you each day along with other “regulars”.

  • Freesia:

    Something that puzzles me.

Sarah has rapidly (and picking up steam by the day) become an embarrassment and a liability for the GOP. She’s so hobbled by the overwhelming negatives (Nixon levels) that she’s practically political poison. And she won’t shut her mouth.

Why hasn’t the GOP jumped on the chance to use all of this to finally rid themselves of the Palin problem? Oh they’ve had Rove making noise and some individual Republicans wouldn’t campaign with her and have been very very reluctant to say a word of support for her political hopes.

But it’s odd that they don’t seize the chance to finally make the Wild Alaskan Dingbat fly away.

  • Melly:

Ooh, harsh, Joe…I love it! Ignominious. Detritus. Egomania. Jabber.

    Bullseyes.

    Lay. It. On.

  • lilybart:

Think of the money to made in books and speeches about the failed campaign for President and the LSM that was so unfair!

  • Don'tHatetheGame:

The reason she would “plow through the door” is because God was opening it for the person in front of her.

  • teamalaska:

She will find a way to stay on the air $$, she wants to be the host of a godly show. Top right wing churchy folks will support the, ” 7 mountains to power”, through SP. $arah will work the late night TV channels.

  • Mary:

May I add: Force. Sarah. To. Use. A. Dictionary!

  • Mary:

    Ha! Elbows flying, no doubt!

Speaking of elbows, I really enjoyed the excerpt of Geoffrey Dunn’s book, on google books. Seems that Sarah, as an adolescent, was just as insufferable as the adult Sarah. Shudder.

  • Don'tHatetheGame:

All kidding aside, I have read many, many articles, blogs, opinions, etc. of why Sarah will or will not run for the presidency with almost all of them sidestepping the one thing everyone seems to have forgotten. Sarah is stupid. She doesn’t do interviews unless she has the answers because she is stupid. She does not have the ability to think on her feet, so she has never taken Q&A’s even from her supporters because she is stupid. She can’t debate because she is stupid. She won’t run for president because it would take all of five minutes for that amazing stupidity to come to the forefront again and everyone will remember, that’s right… that’s why I didn’t vote for her… she’s stupid.

  • Star:

I for one hopes $he does run…I want to see her go down in flames…she can’t remember all the lies she told.loading up on popcorn and margarita’s…..

  • Steve Marks:

    Joe,

Looking fwd to the book, thanks for working on it.

Sarah won’t run, there was never a chance she would and I’m genuinely surprised you and others think she might after all you’ve uncovered. It was always about the money primarily. Sure there is the narcissism and wanted to stay in the spotlight, but if we all were too think hard on this, Sarah can do in 2012 the same thing she did in 2010, stay relevant by appearing to support certain candidates in the primaries and drawing crowds and giving Fox News “interviews” and continuing to rake in speaking fees by staying “relevant.”

I stress again, while it may appear to be about fame (and that’s certainly part of it), it has always been about fortune. Get it while she can, string it out as long as they can. She simply isn’t running for Prez, and you can take that to the bank.

  • jk:

I’m sure she can find some idiot to agree to run with her. There are idiots all over the place.

  • Kilob:

No one should buy this nonsensical story that the Palins couldn’t have a “fish picker” son born in Texas as told by Todd Palin himself. The reason they failed to even consult a local Texas doctor was because there was no fetus to seek medical care for. A fifth grader could have come up with a more plausible story than that.

  • KatieAnnieOakley:

$arah will never, ever settle into playing “second fiddle” to another; she is just. too. into. the. POWER of POTUS.

  • jk:

I completely agree with your post. She definitely wants to rule the country, but has no desire or ability to actually RUN the country. Can she hire a manager to do that for her?

  • KatieAnnieOakley:

As Meatloaf sang it, “Two Out of Three Ain’t Bad.”

I do NOT think the emails will drop at then end of May; if Sean Parnell can hold-off releasing them until July 26th, she (and most likely he and the remaining Palin appointees, aka “his administration”) will beat any possible Ethics charges filings that the emails may hold the key to.

Alaska State Statutes state Ethics charges must be filed within a two year limit. Her “last day at work” was July 26, 2009.

The above is only my opinion… hopefully, the emails WILL be released at the end of May.

  • Virginia Voter:

I have always maintained that Sarah probably has some kind of undiagnosed learning disability like ADHD , or is just on the low end of IQ range, like borderline “special needs”. The run on sentences, word salad, and malapropisms have not improved over the two and a half years on the national stage, despite the hundreds of thousands of PAC dollars spent on consultants and speech writers. Sarah’s diction and elocution are worse than the average middle school student.

I wonder in amazement about these organizations who pay Sarah $100k a pop for a speech…talk about a ripoff. The woman can barely speak the English language properly.

  • Phil Blythe:

Hell, she didn’t seem to realize she was not at the top of the ticket in ’08.

  • Phil Blythe:

    VP Hillary Clinton?

  • FrostyAK:

I think she is narcissistic enough to run, as either as an R or an independent, as long as the $$$$ are pouring in from her base. Totally avoiding the press and pontificating as usual on facebook and twit, tearing down her opponents. No policy, just mean girl garbage

The base seems to believe she was anointed by God, as she does. That ploy will take a lot of wind out of her opponents sails, and make it very difficult for them to make enough money to secure a nomination.

Has anyone been noticing how much time she is spending in AZ? What does it take to establish residency in AZ? There is at least one national political position there that will be up for grabs soon. Someone who ran for POTUS should be a shoe-in with all the brain dead voters in AZ. And we know Brewer would back her.

  • Scorpie:

But, KAO, the SOL in Alaska for fraud is 10 years not 2. That just might make a difference.

  • KatzKids:

Joe, I agree that she will run – but not as a Republican. She’s so narcissistic she really does believe she’s the anointed one. She’s said many times that she’ll do it differently IF she decides to run. I would bet that she & her Dominionist handlers have a course of action mapped out. Hope I’m wrong, but I don’t see her sitting on the sidelines, without getting to show Pres. Obama that she will grind him into the dust.

  • This is how I have envisioned Sarah Palin’s future, say in 2013. http://goo.gl/LYF7v But somehow I really doubt I’d ever be THAT hungry.

  • Sir Guestalot:

Totally agree. She can’t run, won’t run, & got her eyes done.

  • Tired of the Empress:

Yes…..fraud is fraud and the statute of limitations is indeed 10 years. Take a note, Sarah and Sean. We will NOT sit down and shut up.

  • Tedthekiller:

She will plow through the door that God just held open for her because she only functions in one mode, gimme, gimme, gimme. She’s the perpetual soon to bride at Filene’s basement on wedding dress sale day running amok grabbing whatever isn’t tied down. She’s continuously trying to get more and more, oblivious to the ugliness and havoc that she’s wreaking. Sarah loves and needs attention, she loves and wants fame, she loves and wants power, she wants to be relevant and she wants to be respected but whether she’s an ex-VP candidate or ex-Governor, a mother or reality show star, Sarah can’t hide her true self. She can’t hide the petty, vindictive, thin skinned, ignorant, dull, greedy, ugly, person that hides behind her fake smile and fake glasses. The soon to be bride might have snatched the gown she wanted, she might be wearing a beautiful white dress, but that doesn’t mean she’s a virgin, the bride in this case is a filthy whore. And more and more people know it.

  • jk:

    As if.

Now, VP Rick Santorum, that I could see.

  • KarenJ:

The interview/monomania-logue with Greta VS the other night was videotaped in the common-use park about 500 feet away from Bristol’s house in Maricopa AZ. That story about Bristol banning Sarah, and Bristol becoming more liberal — just that, a story. The Palins are always ‘just makin’ things up”.

  • KarenJ:

The list of Republican presidential candidates in their right minds is a very short one, getting shorter by the day.

  • cranberry:

This is the sickness of fundamentalist religion. It is all about Sarah plowing through the door, not God opening a door.

  • jk:

That’s bizarre. Why wouldn’t she do the interview at the local fox affiiate? Are we supposed to believe Sarah is such an outdoors woman that she’s ALWAYS outdoors, or that she’s such a family woman that she can’t bear to be away from them for an hour? Did they knock on Bristol’s door: “Well, golly gee, it’s Fox news. You wanna interview my mom? She’s over at the park down the street pushin’ Tripp on the swing. I’m sure she won’t mind. Why don’t we head down there and ask her?”

  • diz:

The closest the other 44 got was “I am not a crook” Nixon. $aint$arah evidently took that as a weakness and began her stronger “But I am” campaign in the hopes of reviving the true mantra of the GnOP.

  • Angiemomma:

I understand the need to make sense of this baffling, hateful ignoramous, but as a mother of a child with ADHD, I’m deeply insulted. My son could argue circles around that baffoon. However, you may be onto something with the special needs bit. More likely, she’s bi-polar and swings wildly from manic to depressed. This coupled with her obvious sociopathic and narcissistic personality…the woman is clearly off her rocker.

  • Angiemomma:

Freesia…I was booted from HuffPo for putting too many links to Babygate stories in my comments. You’re the only one I’ve been able to locate since. Do you know if that’s happened to others?

  • Angiemomma:

I’ve been saying that for months…just watch it happen.

  • Freesia:

    Hi there Angiemomma. 🙂

    I thought I hadn’t seen you around.

Let me think….No. I’ve heard people here and there mention that’s it’s very difficult to get a post through that has links (I’ve been fairly lucky here and there so I’m wondering if it’s got to do with phrasing of the post or something) but never specifically known of them to be banned.

I wonder why you would be blocked? If they don’t want the links then they can (regretably) just reject the post but I see no reason to not allow you to post at all.

Did you write to the site to ask them for more details? If you haven’t, you should. I’ve written them before when I was puzzled by something and have sometimes gotten back a reply.

  • Freesia:

Mr. McGinnis, I just saw a post by someone named “BookLover” on the Progressive Alaska site which goes to something I’ve puzzled over myself. It popped out at me when MSNBC released the emails they’d requested. I’ll paste the post in full:

“One of the e-mails that was released to MSNBC et al and found at the Crivella West website is this:.
    http://www.crivellawest.net/palin/default.html

It is dated 17 Apr 2008 and refers to a Chocolate Lab being offered for sale to the Palins and was ready for adoption on 15 April.

It is one of those oddities as the Palins apparently went many years with no dogs, then suddenly they are going to acquire one, knowing a DS baby is being added to the household and will require massive care and attention. Apparently the Palins did have a dog at some point, but it didn’t work out and if I remember correctly, the dog went to the Menards. Whether it was the same dog that was offered in the email or not, I couldn’t say.

The timing is just weird, DATED THE SAME DAY AS HER SPEECH IN TEXAS. It just keeps nagging at me, like it is some coded message relating to Trig being ready for the Palins to take home. I’ve done some googling on Daniel Hahn, the person offering the dog, but was not able to come up with anything.”

It’s nagged at me too. The timing of it. Especially in light that this is clearly not an animal friendly family.

Do you know anything? Did you hear anything about this when you were researching your book?

    It’s just odd. It is.

  • Virginia Voter:

Angiemomma…no intention to insult, my son is also ADHD, but if you re-read my post I made appoint of saying undiagnosed, meaning that she never received proper treatment or even recognized the problem. Some forms of ADHD used to be misinterpreted as low intelligence, when sometimes the opposite is true. Children with ADHD run the gamut in terms of intelligence level, one has nothing to do with the other . Sarah’s inability to complete a coherent thought could be due to ADHD.

  • I’m going with stupid. Of the type that is demonstrable, because she shows no ability to wonder if she is. Humility is usually a big marker of intelligence. I think Plato talked of this–he called it double ignorance. One could be too ignorant to realize that one was. Or to paraphrase that other famous philosopher “Dirty Harry”….”a man’s got to know his limitations”. ;^)

  • Great Ted. Don’t hold back.(!) I’ve been in Filene’s basement and had that “find” snatched out of my basket. Whoa– great simile. Sarah– the bargain shopper and unaccountable thief. 😉

  • Freesia:

This evening on Fox (where else?) Sarah Palin accused Barack Obama of stealing the 2008 election.

“We are a land of laws.” said the woman who’s entire career is one long ethics violation.

    http://www.politicususa.com/en/sarah-palin-obama-2008

Oh I haven’t made my daily announcement on the internet. Let me take care that right now: “I loathe John McCain”. There. I feel better.

  • But she would claim that everyone was picking on her….and she’d act all sad and pitiful…
