The Girl Can’t Help It: Nastiness & Pettiness Form Sarah’s Core//UPDATE 1.1

Even knowing that it was the right thing to do–both from a standpoint of simple decency and for her own self-interest–Sarah Palin last night could not bring herself to congratulate President Obama.

On Twitter, she thanked “American men and women in uniform.”

On Facebook, she added “our intelligence services.”

But for President Obama, Commander-in-Chief of U.S. military and intelligence forces, nary a word.

She’s just too mean-spirited and resentful.  It’s in unguarded moments that character–or lack of same–most often reveals itself.

First, after the Giffords shooting and again last night, Sarah inadvertently gave us a glimpse of what passes for her heart.

It ain’t pretty.

The Washington Post reported yesterday that when Sarah appeared at the MSNBC party after the White House Correspondents dinner, “Invariably, onlookers whispered to their friends: ‘Isn’t she pretty? Isn’t she nice?‘”

Answers?

No, and no.

UPDATE:

Even Rush Limbaugh was able to say what needs to be said:  “Thank God for president Obama.”

Snarky Sarah has painted herself into another lonely corner by refusing to give the president credit for the successful Bin Laden operation.

UPDATE 1.1

Limbaugh now says he was being sarcastic, which makes him every bit as horrid as I always thought he was.  Let’s see what Sarah says tonight at the “Honor the Troops” event at Colorado Christian U.

  • TurtleTears:

Great post, but can you add “with apologies to Jayne Mansfield,” who was both beautiful and brainy?

  • Freesia:

Much is made of the fact that Sarah is too unintelligent for leadership, which is very true. I believe she’d have a hard time qualifying for a GED.

But her real problem is that she has no class. This is a little wannabe from podunk (and I happen to be from podunk – a different podunk, so I watched this type of upwardly mobile hick in action enough to know them when I see them) who has spent her whole life wanting to be something BIG so she could lord it over somebody. Did she try to do that at least with accomplishment or hard work or engaging with people who could teach her skills and share information to improve herself? Nah. She thought a push up bra was power and hiking her skirt up was political skill. And when that didn’t work? Bully. Just push and shove and punish and plot against anyone who got in her worthless way.

She’s a low class wannabe. And that’s all she’ll ever be.

  • Jame Doe Seeker:

Wasn’t there a similar reaction, or non-reaction, after Frank Murkowski died in a plane crash?

  • Sally:

I think you’re letting her off too easy. The fact that she CAN be nice, even to MSNBC personalities, says that she isn’t totally void of feelings or even social niceties. She chose to leave Obama out of her messages, but not because she can’t help herself. Because, instead, she cannot bring herself to congratulate a man she abhors, a man she is still certain that, but for some trickery yet to be found, kept her from the White House. The monstrous ego of Sarah Palin is eating her alive. And none too soon. But I agree…she is neither pretty nor nice on the inside, where she once had a soul and compassion.

  • Dr Who:

A lot of people sent tweets back to her calling her classless, jealous and worse. I highly doubt she looks at responses.
She really is like a mean girl stuck in high school. But it’s more than that she has some serious psychopathology that is frightening. People like her should never be in positions of leadership or authority. She’s incapable of taking the high road.
It was interesting to see other leaders responses. Some other Republicans are as mean spirited as Sarah. For some it’s all about politics and the next election and I have no respect for that. Thanking George Bush now??

  • Joe:

Do you mean Ted Stevens? Frank Murkowski is alive and well.

    –Joe

  • VictoriaJ:

My family is from the deep south and we’ve seen our share of sweet smiling pretty fake christians. Sarah Palin would be one of those women who walk into a room with a big smile, hugs everyone in sight, asks about your sick uncle and promises to come see him the next day— or in the vernacular “slaps sugar” on everybody in her path. Everyone believes the facade. But that is all it is.

Then the she goes home after the party, opens her journal and commences to say the nastiest things about the hosts and all their guest. She’ll fake a cold so she doesn’t have to visit your poor sick uncle too.

We live in a society that tends to judge the shallow end of the pool. Some have a hard time with something as deep as character and a person’s prevailing past history. That’s how you get cursed with a Palin.

  • Our experience with Mrs. Palin began with the understanding that for the first time (that I am aware of) we had a political figure who was unable to use a subject and a verb in a sentence. Her disorganized speech and thought patterns were alarming enough. And then came the avalanche of all that we’ve seen since then.

Since I am fairly certain Mrs. Palin could not pass one semester at Columbia, let alone Harvard Law School, she might have been better off not attacking someone who could. But mental illness is not rational now, is it?

Her lack of not only class, but grace, make me now want to end the conversation about her. She is nothing.

And to think that they were all snickering in the ballroom when he knew what was about to go down. It’s appalling that we’ve landed in this place in our society.

  • msf:

She’s just so damn mean I don’t think of her as pretty. Interesting article in the paper today by Dana Milbank regarding the dinner Saturday night. His theory is the journalists wind up serving as pimps: “We recruit Hollywood stars to entertain the politicians & we recruit powerful political figures to entertain the stars. Corporate bosses bring in advertisers to gawk at the display & journalists lucky enough to score invitations fancy ourselves celebrities.” Pretty much says it all.

  • True Blue Girl:

I feel better when I remind myself that Sarah Palin is just a nasty little piece of trash, a minor nuisance and distraction, of no real consequence. Let’s don’t give her more attention than she deserves. Soon enough she will flame out and fade to a distant shrill and discordant squawking, heard from the fringes of serious public discourse, and likely from the edges of her own warped and bitter reality

  • B:

    Typo alert: Isn’t she pretty?

Best line was Sully’s, along the lines of, “Isn’t she 8 months pregnant?” After all, she looked as pregnant as she did in 2008.

  • BfromC:

Ah, Joe. You have come to know her so well. I know you’ve written about both fascinating characters and criminal minds. I’m beginning to realize just what a trip you’ve taken on your journey to write a book about Palin. I’m guessing you will need some serious R&R and mind clearing after the book is out and you’ve done all the interviews and follow-up.

Many of us would like nothing better than to rid our minds of this woman. But for now, we must not!

But hey, who really talks about Paris Hilton anymore? Finally. There is hope.

  • jk:

Sarah “plays nice,” but she is entirely self-centered and self-serving. I think it’s safe to say based on the testimonies of people who were once confidants and colleagues and friends, that she will turn on you in a heartbeat, no matter how nice she’s been in the past.

  • Tservo:

    Aha! Andrew is funny, right?
Yes, Palin is a good looking woman- so what? Beauty in her case is hardly virtue.
Palin has conquered looking pretty, nice work, now: what else do you have to offer?

  • AFM:

Freesia, I found out with these podunkings really are people that are stupid. You can’t reason with stupid. I come from a podunk town also. My husband’s cousin has never left the state of Tn and has no idea there is a big world out there and they don’t care. All he cares about is his hunting, fishing and his truck. Really that is all he cares about. No wonder they look up at the evil from Wallisa. She is soooooo jealous of president Obama because he has all the good traits she wishes she could have. It will never ever happen. She will always be the loser, quitter from Wallisa who has managed to put AK on the map for all the wrong reasons.

  • Dee:

If Palin does decide to run, someone should make sure to have a room ready in a mental ward in that for her to lose a 2nd time to Obama — oh, I can’t stop laughing at the thought!!

I think she would probably take a size small in a Little White Jacket!!!

She still lives in her mind in high school — That ‘mean girl’ in high school. She just can’t get over it – McCain/Palin LOST!! Heee, heeee, heee!!!

  • Joe:

Yes, as The Grateful Dead said, “What a long strange trip it’s been.” And it won’t be over for me until after the book is published in September.

    –Joe

  • True Blue Girl:

I will try to be brief with the details, but there’s some personal history that I think is relevant.

I woke up one day to the horrific discovery that I was married to, and had just borne a child with, a man very much like Sarah Palin: pathologically narcissistic, deceitful, vindictive, and wholly unstable. I divorced him amid an ever accelerating storm of vicious lies, threats, vendettas and slander. Nothing was off limits, nothing out of bounds. It was unimaginable, worse and worse until I was simply worn down by how impossible it seemed that his lies would ever be discovered, that he would ever answer for the sickening damage he had knowingly and intentionally caused to so many in his life.

I moved away to escape the overwhelming and warped reality he created with his lies. I was desperate and disheartened in ways it is painful even now to think about. I went about raising my child without the benefit of family or friends, many of whom, sadly enough, chose the comfortable illusion of false equivalency (a messy divorce, custody issues). The child support stopped immediately, on top of everything else, but also any interest in visitation. I felt that he had won in some important and ugly way.

Six months later, I learned that he had been arrested for dozens of felony crimes which included drugs and indecency with a minor, multiple victims and as young as 12. Horrified? Yes. Surprised? Not really. He is now serving the 10th year of a 15 year prison sentence. My child, as it turned out, has developmental disabilities, and my life has focused on these special needs. I have never looked back with anything other than relief.

My point is that the worst of these people keep going along their destructive path until they are stopped somehow, but I have come to believe that they carry the seed of their own destruction, like a bit of toxic antimatter of the soul.

I think that Sarah Palin may not be stopped externally, but nevertheless may self-destruct under the weight of her mental instability and at the cost of meeting her own pathological needs.

This is as close to hope as I can manage, but for today it’s what passes for optimism.

  • Molly_WI:

Sociopaths know how to be charming in order to get what they want. Good looking sociopaths are probably among the most dangerous, I would argue. It’s just too bad for Sarah, that enough of us get glimpses of her inner serpent that we don’t fall for her.

And, yes, Andrew Sullivan, she DOES look about 8 months along, now that you mention it.

  • Tom in HD:

It seems OBL’s death is timely, given your deadline for “The Rogue”. Was it the nail-in-the-coffin of Palin’s extended 15 minutes??? God, I hope so.

    Looking forward to your book.

  • MissHarleyQuinn:

I find it interesting when people comment about Mrs. Todd Palin losing to President Obama or in her mind that he stole the election from her. There is a small, niggling fact that always goes missing, that fact being Sen. John McCain. By her own words, deeds, and attitude I can only surmise she had figured he’d be dead already and she would be in the White House! 😉

  • jk:

Congratulations on getting yourself and your child away from such a toxic person. That took immense strength and courage.

I think your description on how people like your ex and Sarah Palin carry the seed of their own destruction is perfect.

Thank you for sharing your story.

  • She’s mean and ugly to the core. Her supposed “prettiness” comes from all the makeup she slathers on…wonder how pretty she is devoid of makeup. Her “niceness” is fake and her smiles aren’t genuine. She reminds me of a B rated actress.

  • cranberry:

The core of Palin’s political base is driven by Obama-hatred.

She can’t afford to show any kind of graciousness toward him.

  • LisaB2595:

Reading through the comments, I wondered, “What can you say about Sarah Palin that hasn’t been said before?”

    Answer: “Something nice.”

Honestly, was anyone ever so petty and small and IN PUBLIC? We’ve all been that petty and small in private. We know enough to be ashamed of our dark sides. How can she not see how horrible such things make her look? She’s so self-absorbed, so oblivious to anything but what she believes is reality. It boggles the mind.

I keep having to remind myself *this woman is my age*.

  • Mary:

McCain would’ve needed food tasters, that’s for damn sure.

  • Mary:

Just saw on the Daily Dish – the post is titled “And Hell Freezes Over” – that Rush Limbaugh has plenty of (deserved) praise for President Obama today. RUSH. LIMBAUGH.

Sara failed her most recent test. How many more is this woman going to get before the show’s over?

  • BanditBasheert:

    Nicely said.
It isn’t really about intelligence – it’s about a very small way of thinking and perception. She fits as a big fish in a teeny pond and the other pondies don’t seem to mind there is a moron in their midst.

She has an extremely limited world view which apparently served her well. Then she tried to visit the “Big Time” and due to her circular thinking and mental illness, she is not accepted by most right thinking people with functioning brains.

Her lack of class simply points it out, just how small town limited she actually is. Interesting though. Not everyone who comes from a small town is so mentally limited. She never chose to excel beyond “mediocre”.

She won’t ever campaign against the Prez because she won’t make it out of the primaries. If we (as an anti-$arah) collective can ask questions about her and point out her multitude of obvious flaws and failings, can you imagine if a fellow Republican asked her the same questions? On stage! In a debate!!! With all of us watching!!!!! Oh happy day!!!!

I want to congratulate America’s armed forces and President Obama for a job well done. Let history show that the perseverance of the US military and the American people never wavered.”

My congratulations as well for getting out when you did, and being able to move with your children. So many women married to abusers end up imprisoned by custody and visitation laws and many lose their children entirely. Like you said, they will lie endlessly and so many people do look upon the situation as just “he said, she said” in divorce and custody litigation, including the judges. Its funny you see the link between Palin’s toxicity and your abusive ex. I do as well. These people lie so much they begin to believe their own lies. And yes, they are so toxic that they infect everything and everyone around them with their poison. You are one of the rare ones that got to see your abuser finally caught and punished.

  • eliminate hypocrisy:

The intellectually-challenged Palin is not going to participate in any of the debates. She will throw her hat in the ring at the very last minute in order to avoid being asked questions and being compared side-by-side with the other Republican contenders. She is an empty vessel and a coward who throws bombs from the safety of her one-way communication vehicles such as FB and Fox. If she had even a single informed or coherent thought in her empty little head, she’d have been all over the Sunday morning news shows long ago.

Sociopaths are the most charming people you’ll ever meet — it’s how they get away with everything. Master cons. Not to be confused with sincerely nice people. Enter Sarah Palin.

$arah is a sociopathic personality. On the far end, they are Serial Killers. $arah is on the other end. That is, until her jealousy gets the best of her and her violence elevates from throwing canned foods at Todd.
They have NO conscience. They are extremely Narcissistic. $he is too self-centered to care about any one/thing other than herself. Her children are victims. Todd is complicit in all of this.
If they were a “Regular American Family”, Child Services would have been called in to investigate their Parenting years ago! They would have most likely lost their children to the State Foster Care System. Her money and power buy her protection from this.
I agree with most of the Commenter’s here. $arah will eventually do herself in for good. The more lies, hate and violent rhetoric she spreads will keep getting worse, as long as she continues to get away with it. But sooner or later, it will all catch up to her.
Joe~ I can barely wait until your book is released!!

  • Susan:

I can accept mean and petty, I can not accept that “She can’t help it”. Sarah Palin is personally irresponsible, and in being so, reprehensible. She is not a leader. She possesses no quality that I find admirable or worthy of the side show attraction that has been staged by the theater producers we refer to as the MSM.

I can’t wait for your book Joe, although I know wait I must. My hope is that you finally lance this boil, that has festered far to long on America’s conscience.

I posted this a short while ago on Palingates but it really fits in here too:

Yesterday I think this country made a shift, turned a corner and averted a disaster. One that will only become more apparent over time and after the next election. I’m talking about terrorism but not only of the foreign born kind. The terrorism that has always frightened me the most is the kind that is coming from the fundamentalist right in this country. Their fascist desire to rule this country – and the inroads they have have made in the last few years has frightened me more than any ten Osamas could. Check out my screen name(ItCouldHappenInAmerica) if you don’t believe me 🙂

This country’s fascists got very brave with Obamas’ election and they crawled out from under their rocks, elected their queen Ester Sarah, and proceeded to move their evil plan forward to dominate this country with their sick agenda.

What Obama did yesterday is a very BIG symbol – not only to the world but also to our own home grown dominionists. He will not allow this country to be overtaken by fear and that includes fear of our own citizens. While the screeching birthers, sickos, and right wing nut jobs are huffing, puffing and beating their breasts – the hated black man takes out the biggest symbol of evil in our time. Wonder how long it will take them to get the message?

  • Marie:

It will be a busy 30 days as you never know what will crawl out next? Good luck! And – am waiting patiently for your book!

I don’t find people with hate-filled hearts attractive at all. And that basically sums up Sarah. She is full of hate. Something that Sarah might be finding out is that hate will eat a person alive. You can see the hate all over Sarah’s face and it is not a pretty sight.

I thought Sarah fancied herself a Christian. Doesn’t she know God is all about love. But Sarah fakes her religion along with everything else. I am sure she reads the bible about as often as she reads newspapers.

Hey Sarah, try reading the Book of Matthew sometime. Verse 34 is entitled ‘The greatest Commandment’. Jesus himself said Love is the greatest commandment. Why do you not follow God’s greatest Commandment Sarah?

Thank you for your indulgence Joe; I will preach no more forever on your blog.

Laura, you give her way more credit than she deserves to put her name in the same sentence with the words “Columbia” or “Harvard.”

I’m not sure she could pass a semester at our local “Harvard on the Highway” juco down the road. I’m not buying a “journalism degree” until I see a high school diploma. Especially since she doesn’t seem to have graduated from “junior high mean girl” into any kind of adult, rational or otherwise.

To just be unladylike about it, her ass is still chapped that “she” got beat (after all, that freudian “slip” with her at the top of the ticket showed us all it was really HER that was running!!) by a brilliant, kind, African-American–and that no matter what she tried, she couldn’t stir up enough hatred to match her own & defeat him.

She’s a coward, a racist, an ignoramus, and a petty, small person. And the sooner someone exposes her for what she is, on a BIG STAGE, the better off our country will be.

  • AFM:

LOL. I remember telling my husband if McCain won he better watch his back because Palin forgot her place. She kept acting like she was the presidential candidate instead of McCain. Honestly I truly believe that. She is so hungry for power.

It’s almost the obsession of someone who’s been jilted. It’s like Glen Close in “Fatal Attraction.” Didn’t she offer energy advice to the new administration right after the election? I guess she took it seriously enough that she really thought they’d take her up on it, then her disappointment must have turned to rage.

Trump has a bit of the same obsessive feeling – both he and Sarah are alike in the emotional depth of their nastiness about Obama, and this sets them back a bit from the rest of the Republican field. The others are cynical team-politics haters, but Sarah and Trump have their egos invested in it. It’s very peculiar.

Sarah may begin to envy Trump because at least Obama paid Trump the compliment of attention.

  • Well Joe, at least you have an end date on this crazy Palin trip! Alaskans like myself have to endure this pathetic trip until she is completely exposed as a fraud and there is some kind of accountability!

  • claire:

Truer words were never spoken. She makes my blood run cold. I am stunned that she has fooled so many good people.

  • The fruit of Sarah’s life is rotten! 2 Timothy 3:2 People will be lovers of themselves, lovers of money, haughty, boastful, proud, abusive, disobedient, ungrateful, unholy, selfish. Appreciate your thoughts, Joe.

  • Jame Doe Seeker:

Yes, I meant Ted Stevens. Sorry. But her non-reaction then and behavior at his funeral was, I thought, classless, and was seen by other Alaskans as such. Whatever you think of his politics, Stevens loved Alaska and did a lot for the state over the years. A person’s death is the time to let bygones be bygones, and to toss aside all grudges. It seemed to hurt Sarah to allow Ted, at the time of his death, to be the center of respect and attention.

  • KatieAnnieOakley:

It used to be considered “gauche” to speak of religion and / or politics in public places or in private with mixed company. Impolite discussion was similar to describing porn: you couldn’t describe it exactly; it’s something different to everyone, but – when it went too far you knew it, immediately. Discomfort is a desired outcome; todays’ fear-mongering, hate-spewing political partisanship has gone way, way too far. And Palin is the Official Poster Child for the extreme religious right. She’s all soundbites, and no viable solutions.

Nowadays you can listen-in on hostile, vile, not suitable for public consumption conversations virtually anywhere. It’s not a matter of a veil being lifted in a necessary way; it is the failing of perspective and personality filters, a coarsening of public discourse, the anything goes as long as I get to air MY opinion, the only opinion that matters here – society be damned! It’s now neighbor-against-neighbor, friend against friend – even children are impacted by the adults in their lives inability to attempt compromise over their political beliefs. Hate begets hate. It’s not only territorial anymore, it’s becoming generational. Extremism is now mainstream; accepted, because that’s just the way it is! Deal with it – there may be consequences if you don’t… if not for you, for someone or something you care deeply for or about.

Joseph McCarthy must be grinning ear-to-ear in his grave. Palin IS the modern day McCarthy, with heaping doses of John Birch Society religious extremism thrown in. God help us all – she must be stopped from holding office ever again or influencing politics in any way.

I agree with WakeUpAmerica – she needs to be checked for the Mark of the Beast.

  • Sue:

I think you give Sarah too much credit. I don’t think the fact that she can act nice to the “lamestream media” she despises so much prove she has feelings. It proves she’s a coward. Don’t you think she’d be all sweetness and light if she spoke to Obama face to face?

This “Sweet Sarah” show is nothing more than self-preservation. If she said some of the things to these peoples faces that she does in the safety of her studio or from her blackberry, they’d respond. Then she’d have to respond, without the aid of RAM. Then we’d all be replaying it over and over on YouTube every time we need a good laugh.

What does that all mean? Is it a private joke?

  • Alaskan:

    What’s the Jayne Mansfield reference?

    Thanks for this, KatieAnnieOakley.

The commentary here on this blog was starting to sound hateful to me, and I was beginning to wonder of Joe McGinniss’ book would just be more of the food fight.

I appreciate the effort to expose whatever it is about this woman brings out the sickness, darkness and ignorance of this country, but if it makes us hateful and personally vengeful, then we’ve been sucked into it as well.

I think your assessment, and the previous post is on target. Sarah’s weakness, one of them anyway, is that she functions on a purely emotional level. She is reactionary and emotional, and proven time and time again to be incapable of letting any perceived slight go or taking the high road. Sarah and her male counterpart, Beck, smolder on the surface. Both of them probably know their natures and guide their career paths accordingly. That’s why Sarah no doubt quit the governorship. It’s not an overstatement I think to say it was too hard for her. Not because she’s altogether stupid, I think she’s bright. But too hard for a personality like her.

Some of this works in these people’s favor btw, in respect to their limited following. The general public is attracted at first to the shiny, pretty, or noisy object, then repelled once they see the instability. But by that time they’ve gleaned a base from which to work off of.

The title of the post is a reference to a 1956 film “The Girl Can’t Help It” starring Jayne Mansfield. The movie is cute and silly, but worth seeing just to watch Jayne Mansfield walk! Trailer here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zd94ogwy2Po

Please don’t worry about the book. Just as a book ought not to be judged by its cover, (although I do like the cover of THE ROGUE) neither should it be judged–in advance–by the tenor of comments on an author’s blog.

Thank you, Sarah for proving my point with your eloquent answer to “Who’s the most influential journalist?”. She can’t even answer a softball question off-script.
