The Morlocks and the Palins//UPDATE

The horrific photo above shows Wasilla’s Jeremy Morlock gleefully posing as he lifts the head of an Afghan civilian he’s just murdered.

The New York Times Magazine has just posted an extensive story by Luke Mogelson about Morlock and his psychopathic platoon buddies called “A Beast in the Heart of Every Fighting Man.”

I urge you all to read it, and to bear it in mind the next time you hear Sarah Palin say she’s “the proud mother of a combat vet.”

Sarah’s reference is to her son, Track, who was never actually in combat.
But one of Track’s best friends from high school, Jeremy Morlock, was.
Jeremy’s sister, April, is Bristol Palin’s best friend, often seen with her in LA during Bristol’s days on “Dancing with the Stars.”

And the ties between the Palin and Morlock families are much deeper and more longstanding than that. They go back to Todd Palin’s hometown of Dillingham, and Todd’s relationship with Jeremy’s mother’s twin sister, and extend through the vandalism of Jeremy’s mother’s house by Willow Palin and her friends in December, 2009.

Not to be a tease, but I write about all this in The Rogue and can’t say any more before the book is published on September 20.

Morlock’s lawyer was able to cut him a deal that could see him paroled in only seven years, in return for ratting out his buddies. Shushannah Walshe at The Daily Beast wrote more about Morlock here.

Obviously, I don’t believe in guilt by association. But I wonder whether Sarah, as she praises our troops and tries to identify with them as a Military Mom–the way she used to claim she was a Hockey Mom (or should that be Hokey Mom?)–gives even a passing thought to Track’s old buddy, Jeremy.

Among the many character witnesses to testify at Jeremy’s court martial, the Palins were notable by their absence.

Millions of Americans have fought in wars on foreign soil. Almost all with honor and courage.
I met many when I was in Vietnam in 1967 and again in 1971. They did their best for a doomed and losing cause.

I never met one who would have grinned with pride, as you can see Jeremy Morlock doing, while posing with the body of a defenseless civilian he’d just killed.

Look at that photo again. Does it remind you of another?

UPDATE:

Bristol Palin and April Morlock with Bristol’s son, Tripp

And thanks to a commenter for reminding me that Sarah can’t possibly think it’s unfair of me to call attention to the multi-generational Palin/Morlock relationships.

As she has said:

“I do not think that it is off-base nor mean-spirited…to call someone out on their associations.”

It just gets juicier and juicier – you know, of course, that you are tormenting us. Don’tcha?

  • shandee:

I CANNOT wait for your book! You must be driving Sarah nuts with this blog and I love it.

  • Sue:

“…I do not think that it is off-base nor mean-spirited…to call someone out on their associations and on their record” – Sarah Palin

  • JR:

Who has Sarah been pallin’ around with? I am fascinated by the things this woman says & does (and gets away with!) – I bet you had some fun researching your book.

  • Dis Gusted:

Is Morlock actually Todd’s love child?

  • Freesia:

Yes. Look happy she looks. And look who she’s been palin’ around with. (And by the way, you know that if Barack Obama had a personal connection to a friend who had acted out “The Most Dangerous Game” that this harpy would have chewed it til it squealed. And she should have. What a shame no one turned it back on her.)

That picture. I tell you as much her every move and every word are reprehensible, the fact of the matter is I think she’s seriously unhinged. There’s something….very wrong with Sarah Palin. There’s a shamelessness and a complete detach from human need (even with her own children) that is….off. Way off. I’ve often wondered if her own medical record surpression has less to do with Trig and more to do with a revelation that she’s had mental health issues. It’s a valid thing to wonder. (By the way you know the “word salad” thing could be more than just an indication of complete lack of intelligence and the panicked response of someone faking their way through.. The scattered thoughts and odd speech patterns can be an indication of a disorder.)

  • CougIPortland:

@ sue: yes, unless it’s HER. Can’t wait for your book, Joe. You speak for a lot of us.

  • Freesia:

Wanted to clarify. The “And she should have” was unintentional. I was starting to write another sentence and changed my mind and then was distracted by Rachel Maddow. Think of it as the “phantom knee” in the WND photo shop picture.

I have got to stop typing while I watch news shows. That’s why God gave us commercial breaks. πŸ˜‰

  • Scorpie:

Trying to be patient and waiting for your book to get to my house. Very nice post. Speaking about her associations, have you researched Todds’ AIP membership?

  • Palin brought up Bill Ayers yet again today, in her rambling response to Obama’s birth certificate release:

“Palin: β€œI think the media is loving this because they want to make Birthers as they call people who are just curious about the President of the United States and his background, and his associations, and his consistency with what he says today versus what he said in both the memoirs that he wrote, or Bill Ayers or whomever wrote.”

  • crystalwolfakacaligrl:

Wasn’t it Palin herself who said Canidate Obama was “Palin around with terrorist’s”? Just sayin’…

  • Phil Blythe:

Personally, I would not drag Track into the Morlock story based on what I know. God knows I wouldn’t want to be inferred into the acts of everyone I’ve associated with. However, I cannot blame journalists for doing this to Palin, since she’s done so much of it herself. Once again, she makes “collateral damage” of those around her, including her own family. It’s a pattern.

  • emrysa:

tripp sure does look happy in that picture. I’ve never seen a happier kid, have you?

  • AFM:

Don’t you think that maybe Palin will be able to get an advanced copy of all these books coming out? I wonder. But I can’t wait either. I have pre-ordered by copy of 3 books. I am happy to get them soon.

  • CougInPortland:

My brain bleeds trying to make sense of that.

  • AFM:

And she was worried about Obama hanging around Ayers. OMG Ayers didn’t kill anyone but her family friend is nothing more than a murder. My mom use to say to me “Tell who your friends are and I will tell you who you are”. She was so right.

  • Can’t wait for the book, which I will likely be committing to memory… Palin is incredibly popular here in DeMint country.

I’ll carry it around and quote it whenever approached by Republicans, which is daily. πŸ˜‰

  • Kimberly:

I sincerely hope you didn’t actually tie in Willow with vandals because she did NOT vandalize the house. The teens who actually threw the party laughed about the absurd publicity of it for awhile.
Why bring the Palins good friends into your web of malicious reporting? Is a military criminal’s friends supposed to just dump him? The Morlocks haven’t lost ANY friends and are still loved by Wasilla acquaintances, despite living in WA to be closer to their brother. If the post above is truly what you think is truth, your book is a scam and so biased that you should feel ashamed.

Also, I have recently discovered through one of Sarah’s good friends from middle/high school that 2 of Dunn’s sources blatantly lied due to jealousy or petty hatred. I can contact you with details. There are many people who are extremely livid that some old residents of Wasilla are tarnishing what was a great childhood for the Heaths and their friends. Just because some people may not have had the same great childhood.

Anyway, I can email you the specific info about the two folks who lied to Dunn.

  • Far East Loon:

    Joe,

    Welcome Home.

I live on the banks of the Mekong river directly across from Laos. The USA dropped 3 million metric tons of bombs on a nation of six million rice farmers. The CIA recruited the Hmong hill tribesmen to fight. The Hmong have been persecuted ever since. In my town in Thailand there is a detention center where 200 Hmong refugees were locked up. Some of them young children up to twenty hours a day in cells.

My friend and neighbor, a young Thai woman was their teacher. Our band did a benefit concert to raise money for school supplies for the kids. A drop in the bucket, a small gesture. Unfortunately last year the Hmong detainees were sent back to Laos to an uncertain fate.

In SE Asia the war is not over as unexploded ordnance continues to kill and maim. At the current rate of clearance in Laos and Cambodia it could take up to 100 yrs.

  • Freesia:

This is why this woman should never hold an office for anything. That’s all she’s got. It’s constant, endless, pointless pointing of fingers in any direction at all in order to smear and to create a drama that points the finger away from having scrutiny applied to her appalling lack of credentials, intellect, stability. Only it’s not working so much anymore. Thank God.

I saw that when I saw the transcript and I thought “this again?? Really?”. And then realized – of course. Because it’s Sarah again. The same old talentless retread nothing that is Sarah.

  • Far East Loon:

    Joe,

For the story of a true American hero check out the story of my friend Frank D. Norton,Cpl. U.S.M.C., after being wounded twice, the second time almost fatally and saving his squad from annihilation, he came to SE Ohio to go to college and has devoted his life the last forty years to the peace movement.

Below is a brief excerpt from an article written by Frank’s brother published in the DailyKos.

    http://www.dailykos.com/story/2006/09/15/246791/-Swiftboat-VictimA-Marine-(my-brothers)-Story

“When the swiftboaters attack a public servant their lies and slander attack other heroes as well. This is the story of of one of those other heroes who was also a swiftboat victim. Many of you probably remember the 2004 anti-Kerry advertisement featuring a veteran throwing his medals over a fence. ( You can see it here, click on the piece entitled “Medals”.) The soldier featured in the advertisement is Frank D. Norton, Cpl. U.S.M.C., who was wounded twice, the second time was nearly fatal, received the Bronze Star for saving his unit from annihilation, and was permanently disabled. He is my brother and this is his story.”

  • gigiz:

Joe, You kindly let us know you are a ‘Trignostic’ and didn’t definitively solve the babygate mystery during your research. Tease away on the rest.

    Chilling, deeply upsetting photos.

  • EatMoreFish:

Ask any of Track’s former hockey coaches and they will tell you that he was an extremely talented player – but SO violent that he seldom made it through a game due to starting so many fights, he was always thrown out. So it’s no surprise he was a close buddy of a killer.

When $arah was running for governor she stated several times that Track ‘was out of state at a hockey camp,’ when in reality he was in ‘hiding’ while given a choice between going to a juvenile detention center or into the Army.

Now Track lives upstairs in an apartment at the Wasilla family home and does nothing – no school, no job. He is probably the most disfunctional of all the Pay-lins, except for his mother.

Joe, I hope you include some of the ‘mystery’ surrounding Track in your book.

  • FrostyAK:

Kimberly? This sounds very much like someone going by the pseudonym ‘Sheila’, who says she knows a nurse who attended Trig’s birth. And knows that two of Dunn’s sources lied. Looks as if the ‘palin fairy trolls’ have arrived.

  • FrostyAK:

It makes me sick to know that Morlock will be eligible for parole in 7 years. He is a MURDERER, no matter how much he cooperates with the prosecution. Look at that picture and then tell me he should ever be paroled…

  • zenna:

Well, it’s all stuff she wrote on her hand a couple of years ago with permanent ink and it’s all she really knows.

  • zenna:

It’s not so much about dragging anyone into it but rather how the Palin/Morlock association is yet another indicator of Palin’s breathtaking hypocrisy and how clueless she really is.

  • zenna:

    He misses his daddy. πŸ™

  • zenna:

Ahh, you wanna sell someone a Bridge to Nowhere while you’re at it?

P-bots reek. In fact, you can smell them from Russia.

  • CariboBarbie Palin:

I don’t think he’ll be very happy in a few years, when he’s old enough to know what a hate spewing, ignorant grandmother he has. I sure hope Bristol keeps him as far away from her as possible.

  • sharon:

sarah..is that YOU??? Where did you come up with that name? Interesting. Anyway, morlock is a murderer and there’s no spin you can put on that one with the whole palin experience. All thngs palin….there’s always a drama or an indictment or a slanderous situation. Please tell me dear kimberly, just exactly how you would feel if the poor young man in that pic had YOUR son’s face? Or your brother? You MUST be palin to have turned this awful tragedy into an opportunity to talk about how many friends palin has and how great she is. Why is there so much death and toxic drama around palin? And don’t pretend it’s not there. Remember pigpen in the Peanuts comic strip? He always had dirt swirling around him everywhere he’d go. And so it is with palin. She is a pigpen with lipstick. πŸ™‚

  • cranberry:

The article in the NYTimes about the boys in combat who make a sport of killing human beings both disgusts and saddens me. Ignorance and fear (and fundamentalist religion) cause this kind of sickness to emerge from the American “culture”, and there is a lot of it going around. The very cult of Sarah Palin celebrates and encourages this weird way of showing “manliness”.

I hope that your book can tackle this American myth head on, and show it for what it is: fear, cowardice and ignorance. If you ask me, this is the underlying struggle that is going on in America today, and the media is definitely on the side of ignorance and fear.

  • lftismygame:

    LOLOL! That made my morning.

  • Freesia:

    lol πŸ™‚

  • B:

That would mean the recent comments are incorrect that say Track is living in Arizona with his girlfriend and baby.

  • Connie:

Have you all read the Rolling Stone article @ Morlock “The Kill Team: How US Soldiers in Afghanistan Murdered Innocent Civlians”?
Very gruesome photos included. Morlock should be locked up forever.
I’m prior service and married to an active duty soldier with over 20 years in service NO ONE in the military condones murder.

  • Dr Who:

Kimberly, you appear to lie as well as Sarah. Is this how the Palinbots are going to react to every story? Make up your own versions. What you are saying is all 2nd, 3rd, etc hand!
How do you really know the vandalism didn’t occur, because other stories have been told by people who were there.
Regarding Dunns sources, he interviewed hundreds of people not just two. I’m sure Joe did as well.
They are both highly respected authors and know what they are doing.
If this is Sarahs plan, to make up fairy tales in response to every slight, it is a very transparent, obvious and stupid plan. You better think of another. But Sarah and her cult never know when to shut up.

You see, I know a grade school friend of Willows boyfriend. And he told me the kids sprayed paint everywhere.
And the check out guy at Taco Bell who dated Sarah in 7 th grade also told me that the Wasilla residents are thrilled that all of the Palins dirty secrets will be out. Should we believe my version and sources or yours!!
We don’t know you. And I’m trying to make a point and that is anyone can make things up!
But good journalists make sure their sources are accurate and verify their stories. I believe Geoffrey and Joe here over any real or imagined friend of Sarahs.

Try spinning your fairytales where there are more gullible/stupid people. How about C for P to start.

  • Weigel weighs in:

    http://www.slate.com/blogs/blogs/weigel/archive/2011/04/28/not-really-breaking-mat-su-regional-hospital-says-trig-palin-was-born-there.aspx

He just doesn’t ask: Who gave birth to Trig. Isn’t that the real question?

And no: “clerks” don’t respond to the media, in my reporting experience. They lose their jobs over things like that.

  • Dr Who:

Everyone please see Slate this am. Another sloppy very lazy report from Dave Wiegel.
He thinks talking to a receptionist at Mat Su hospital qualifies as investigative journalism!!
The woman is talking off the top of her head, not as an official spokesperson.
Wiegel only embarrasses himself! Others who have done real investigations have been unable to get official confirmation from the hospital.
He is so dense and arrogant that he will toss off our responses implying we are crazy and will never believe.
He’s an idiot! I’m sorry, he is! No woman with a high risk pregnancy in an emergency situation would have a baby where there isn’t a NICU unit! The hospital would never take that risk either.
And they induced labor AFTER she said she was leaking amniotic fluid! I could go on and on about how her story is full of holes/lies, but what is the point!

  • jk:

Nah, Shelia actually seems to be Alaskan. Kimberly’s Alaskan friends are all virtual. She stalks Bristol in FB and has made it her personally mission to defend the Palins on a variety of blogs. No, wait, Kimberly has written under her various aliases that she’s met the Palin’s a couple of times (probably during a trek to see the land of Sarah Palin). I sure hope you’re getting paid for all these comments, Kimberly, because if you aren’t that’s just plain sad. From what I understand, Sarah has a lot of disposable income these days thanks to all her gifting and the donation plates she’s liberally passed out to her supporters.

  • Dr Who:

I agree! 7 years?? The boy clearly has deep psychiatric issues. It isn’t normal to enjoy or smile about killing. I find the photo of Palin equally chilling. I have to wonder if Morlock is even getting serious psychiatric treatment. He is a danger to others now and after 7 years of prison, he will be even more dangerous.

  • Dr. Who et al,

Sarah Palin: A Second Opinion is now up:

    http://www.lauranovakauthor.com/blog.html

Join the medical conversation. NICU and all!

  • zenna:

Weigel is yet another ‘journalist’ who publicly demonstrates how incompetent they really are.

You would indeed think they would be more than a little embarrassed! Amazing.

Compare Weigel to someone like Joe McGinniss who is actually looking for real evidence, verifiable facts and asks the right questions.

Then again, Weigel is a joke and Joe is that which is farthest from.

  • Joe:

Track went to church in Wasilla last Sunday.

    –Joe

  • EatMoreFish:

B — That’s the first time anyone in AK or the blogosphere has heard mention of Track/AK/baby, as far as I know. If true, it certainly would have come out by now. …. I’ll stand by the hiding upstairs in Gravel Land at mommy’s house doin’ nothin’. A scaredy cat coward just like $arah. It will be interesting to see if fishes Bristol Bay this summer —

  • EatMoreFish:

Methinks that receptionist will be losing her job fast if she indeed made those comments to a ‘journalist.’
    Watch and see …

  • jk:

I think I remember it was suggested Track has a serious drug problem. If so, I hope he’s getting treatment. It can’t be easy to grow up in that environment but, at least, unlike Bristol, Track has managed to avoid the reality tee vee/cover of in touch magazine embarrassment.
