“May some higher power help us all.”

I’m not religious, but “Amen” seems appropriate here.

  • Joe:

I’m not religious, either. The higher power could be just the best part of ourselves, our individual and collective potential.

Homo Sapiens have the hubris to believe they are a higher order than animals because they have the ability to reason and opposeable thumbs. Animals don’t kill for thrill, nor sense of some kind of superiority based on their politics or beliefs.

    Words Fail.

    Who will stop the Rain?

  • DKey:

So agree with you. My favorite word for it is just “The Force,” as in, “use The Force, Luke!” Hopefully, our better Natures will prevail and we’ll only use the “good side” of this very-real energy.

  • Linda1961:

    Amen.

  • What a horrific act of violence on innocent children by someone who is filled with hatred…sad to say, but Sarah Palin doesn’t care about anyone but herself.

  • WakeUpAmerica:

There are definitely behavior aberrations in the animal world. There are animals that kill for the thrill. I just had a tom cat in my barn that killed baby bunny after baby bunny until the entire litter was dead and left them uneaten. There are rogue bears and large cats as well that have been known to kill for the thrill, not to mention dogs. You will also find homosexuality in the animal world as well. I would say, although I’m not positive, that you will find more animals that eat their young than humans who do the same thing. However, humans have been known to kill their young without eating them.

  • Lani:

I can’t bear to read comments on the news sites. Full of idiots still blaming Muslims, some calling the killer a left-wing plant, denying that a christian would commit a violent act. Now that his Manifesto has appeared, it is clear that he intended to kill the “cultural marxists” and “multiculturalists”. Attacking the teens is like attacking youth gathering for a Young Democrats get together. It was a political act, whether that man is sane or psychotic, because they were the young progressives, some of them the children of members of parlement.

The higher power that may help us all is the voice of sanity, all of us, ending our silence, speaking out and refusing to make any excuses for, or merely laugh at, people who think they are on a mission from god when they spew hatred, intolerance, and acts of cruelty against children, seniors, the poor and the ill.

  • Dicer:

Perhaps when goodness propel us to rise in thought and deed to reach that higher power,we might stand a chance. I have been stunned that many in the media have given Palin and her ilk a platform without calling her out in what has been naked hate, racism and a lack of common decency, and instead, have played stenographer for her bile. The religious leaders play front seats during elections, yet are sadly absent when it really counts.

  • Nat:

Raised in the south Pentacostal Holiness..ie speaking in tongues and such. Needless to say I’m no longer religious either. Brainwashing became clear to me as I aged. I wish others weren’t so easily duped ny a book written by man not any god. Alas this country, and apparently others (who saw Norway coming?) are not thinking logically. Our founding fathers, or at least most of them were deist. They were against organized religion. To see the Palins, Bachmanns, Perrys running for office and the loons who actually support them is indeed frightening! Lawd have mercy on the dumb masses!

  • Sue:

That’s what I was thinking, but couldn’t put into words. Beautifully said, Joe.

  • Rocky in Texas said...:

    Wake up people…

    There is One Race…

    and, it’s called…

    The Human Race.

We have such big issues to deal with to save our world…

Yet, we seem to be stuck on stupid…

Still fighting over the color of skin…

And whose god is the correct god…

The Human Race is really turning out to be such a disappointment.

Don’t you know that the animal kingdom looks at us and thinks…

“you stupid assholes, you think you are so smart, yet you are killing the planet”

    Wake up Humans !!

  • sharon:

the insanity seems to grow more threatening everyday. Death ends all discussion, all hope – and those of us left behind bear the tragedy without being given any choice. Just like the victims. We’re all victims of the extremists and their increasingly deadly threat. I don’t have any answers except to speak up against those who come at us hiding behind some “christian” extemist mindset that is sick, violent and threatens our nation in ways I’ve only begun to witness since the 2008 elections. The crazies have always been out there but I’ve never seen the escalating violence, threats and extreme actions as I see now. Joe’s right. We certainly need a Higher Power and not one created by the crazies!

  • Nat:

    Imagine there’s no heaven
    It’s easy if you try
    No hell below us
    Above us only sky
    Imagine all the people
    Living for today…

    Imagine there’s no countries
    It isn’t hard to do
Nothing to kill or die for
    And no religion too
    Imagine all the people
    Living life in peace…

You may say I’m a dreamer
But I’m not the only one
I hope someday you’ll join us
And the world will be as one

    Imagine no possessions
    I wonder if you can
No need for greed or hunger
    A brotherhood of man
    Imagine all the people
    Sharing all the world…

You may say I’m a dreamer
But I’m not the only one
I hope someday you’ll join us
And the world will live as one

Thank you John Lennon for your wonderful words of wisdom so needed today more than ever.

Evil is alive and well on this earth. Why would anyone do such a thing? I don’t know. Sheer evil this is.

The paper describes this evil person as a Christian Fundie with right-ring political views.

God help us all; but God especially help the families of the murdered.

  • Donna:

Wakeup–I hope you are not implying that homosexual behavior is aberrant. However, that seems to be what you are saying. And I hope you are not putting it in the same category as eating one’s young, thrill killing, or the tragedy in Norway. My apologies if I misunderstand your meaning.

  • Freddy el Desfibradddor:

In the movie “Rambling Rose”, one of the main characters repeatedly refers to The Creative Forces of the Universe – at the beginning, she seems like a nut, but by the end of the movie it’s clear she the one who really gets it.

  • dmoreno:

Saturday, wanting to see how faux news was interpreting the WH discussions, I was appalled to hear them talk of the gunman as, NON-Muslim. What is the world is that? They never mentioned his actual beliefs and then turned the segment into a Muslim bashing rant. It was clear that they were trying to confuse their viewers.

  • lilybart:

WE have all the power. People can change the world in the next 10 minutes just by wanting to. But we need leaders that unite us, not the ones who want to win by dividing us into warring groups.

President Obama may be too interested in uniting us, but he does NOT seek to divide Americans against each other. The fruits of his spirit are kindness and compassion, not hate and snark.

  • lilybart:

The longer God refuses to smite their enemies, the more they feel they must do God’s work for him. I just really think that they don’t believe God exists anymore since Liberals occasionally prosper too, and gay marriage is spreading yet there has been no smiting of NY yet.

I am defending Jesus everywhere these days, though I am no longer an official believer. But he is looking good about now! A RILL Christian country would be pretty great.

  • lilybart:

We all have the capacity for good or evil, it just depends on what seeds we water.

  • Dr Who:

    That photo breaks my heart.
I wasn’t surprised for many to assume it was a terrorist attack in the name of Islam.
While the majority of Muslims are peace loving, you can’t ignore that there is a huge jihadist movement. Some liberals (I am a liberal) make the mistake of not admitting there is a huge problem still with that.
I personally waited to see who did this before judging though!
One thing I wondered about is why are so many Muslims immigrating to Western Europe? They aren’t countries of immigrants like we are. Look at the hatred here towards Mexicans.
It just seems there is far too much hatred in the world. Much of it comes from fear of people different than our families.
This is one reason I’m against home schooling because kids are not exposed to different people.

  • Jeanabella:

Just remembered this, “God helps those who help themselves”. Maybe it was Mom who said it to me or a nun in school, and everyone may have been told the same thing, but even though I was brought up in the Catholic system & Mom is a 3rd order nun now, I have taken comfort in the words of Jesus mostly and in praying in my own words. Faith has helped me for sure, but I don’t have any use for the rest of the church and I don’t bother with any of it. Absolute power has corrupted the church as it would any organization.
I love the teachings of the Dalai Lama, spirituality, knowing my higher self is god & not an idol or made up stories in a book. God is overused and made to take sides. So ridiculous!
People are so ignorant about themselves and how their brain works. Until we make it our number one effort around the world, to put education #1. Food, water, education, respect for women. Women raise the children and need to be educated above all because of this fact.
Oh boy, I guess I feel comfortable here to let it rip this morning.
    Thanks for the post,

    Jeanabella

If only someone like one or all of the former first ladies would unite and call palin out for reducing our national dialogue to the lowest it has been in my lifetime. I sent emails to every former first lady after her numerous attacks on the current first lady imploring them to speak up against her hate filled rhetoric towards the president and his wife to no avail. These women have national recognition and a platform, I don’t recall any of their pet projects being attacked by a political rival. Asking for the nation’s children to eat healthy and exercise is wrong in palin’s eyes.

  • grammy97:

Thank you, FrostyAK; I was going to put that same link here. These Dominionists are evil.

  • lilly lily:

Was reading the NY times while crying.. Last time was for the Japanese in the grip of their, earthquake, tsunami, melting nuclear disaster scene.

What got me was the observation that he seemed to be enjoying it.

Power, the will to power. The power of life or death, and everyone was a dead man on this island with no exceptions in his mind.

This man wanted to be a Knight Templer,. He was born in the wrong century, when this might have passed muster.

Why choose these particular children. Because they were symbolic to him of the left who enable multi-culturalism. He killed Norwegians, native born Norwegians not Muslims who he despised. How did he manage to bridge that gap? So there is a Norwegian Taliban, just as there is an American Taliban.

  • Psalm023:

This is my first time posting on this tragedy. I couldn’t even find words to say, it just hurts so much. It gets me shaking just to think about it, haven’t even had the courage to read details in the news. I feel so much for all those families.

May the Lord help us all!! Amen.

  • Dicer:

A wonderful idea indeed, but when everyone is covering their political cash crop, decency goes down the drain. I have suggested, one word from Nancy Regan would change the tone regarding Palin, yet , all fall on deaf ears, without even a response.Perhaps our youth can shame the media and those who offend, just a thought.

  • lilybart:

The Muslims in Europe went there for the same reason everyone emigrates, for better opportunities. But I do wonder why they refuse to respect the culture they moved into. They emigrated, life did not get better, so they turn their disappointment into anger at “the other” except those “others” were living there first!

Islam is 600 years younger than Christianity and 600 years ago, Christians were committing genocide for religion and refusing others the right to worship the way they wish. So maybe all religions are violent, but over time they moderate.

  • lilybart:

Ben Franklin said that God helps those who help themselves, not Jesus. I only point that out because many Christianists try to use that phrase to prove that God is a GOP God who wants us to pull ourselves up by our own bootstraps, yada yada….

  • Cackling Rad:

Um, Christians in the US just killed over a million innocent Iraqis for no reason except that their coreligionists were blamed for 9/11. And don’t get me started on the Catholics and Protestants in Ireland, or the massacres of Moslems by Christians in the Balkans.

  • FrostyAK:

And a whacko killed that voice too. One wonders if all sane voices will be targeted.

It is said that religion is the opiate of the masses. It seems to work as other, more aggressive, drugs on some.

  • lilly lily:

He wrote for Atlas Shrugged (Pam Geller) as Fjordman.

They are also talking about WOW, World of Warcraft and its effects.

I’ve known people on the net who are deep into WOW.. Not the most stable who get sucked into a deep fantasy life.

This man was living a fantasy, unfortunately taking it beyond a obsession into reality.

I’m sure there will be a enormous amount that comes into the making of his mindset. Now, too late he will be examined in every tiny detail of his influences.

As is always the case, he will have admirering idiots, and develop a following.

Look at the rabid nuts following Palin in her world. The media has a lot to answer for with that one.

  • Chris:

This was political, racist, calculated, and hateful, unfortunately. So sad for those children and families.
    Will we ever evolve?

  • fromthediagonal:

Donna, I do not think you will have to apologize to Wakeup… the connection of homosexuality and aberration and thrill killing in the animal world speak for themselves. Wakeup needs to wake up and do some research in biology rather than creationism.

  • fromthediagonal:

FrostyAK… now go to politicususa for an extended article by Leah on this very subject. It is well worth you time. This need much wider distribution than it is receiving!

  • hockeynana:

This is a very good idea and I am sorry that none of them responded to your suggestion.

I have thought for quite a while that Nancy Reagan could really do a good thing if she would step up and call Sarah out for using “Ronnie” for her own personal agenda. I think I have heard that some of his children were not happy about it, but have never heard one word from Nancy herself. I would think she would want to preserve his image and distance him from such a batshit crazy. Does she really want people to think that he was anything like Sarah Palin?

I had not thought about them all stepping up to defend our wonderful First Lady. They could elevate it above political parties and make it personal.

  • fromthediagonal:

lilybart… do I remember correctly that Franklin spent some time in France? If he did, maybe he was not the originator of that saying.
I still remember my French teacher handing us the booklets in which we took dictation and saying: “Chacun pour suis, Dieu pouf tous”… everyone for themselves, God for all.
That saying never ceased to strike fear into us from 7th grade on up, believe me.

  • lilly lily:

Evidently he was not Fjordman but did quote him.

Pamela Geller complains she had nothing to do with it. She was quoted by the Oslo killer.

He probably will be found to be mentally ill.
